Who we need
Reporting to the Director, Development Advisory, we are hiring a Cost Consultant to join our Atlantic St John’s based team. As our new Cost Consultant, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality estimating and project monitoring services across a range of construction and development projects. Working closely with clients, contractors, lenders, and internal teams, you will support accurate cost planning, change order reviews, progress draw assessments, and ongoing project reporting that will help drive informed decision-making throughout the project lifecycle.
This is a remote role with the expectation that you will be travelling to client sites 1-2 days per week anywhere in the Newfoundland and Labrador region.
What’s in it for you
Project variety and broader technical exposure. You will work on a diverse range of construction and development projects across Newfoundland and Labrador as part of a growing Atlantic Canada practice. Supporting both estimating and project monitoring mandates, you will gain exposure to different project types, stakeholders, and construction environments while developing a broader consulting skill set. Unlike larger organizations where teams are often siloed into a single specialty, you will have the opportunity to build experience across multiple service areas and deepen your understanding of the full project lifecycle.
Career growth and professional development. You will work closely with experienced leaders and senior team members who are invested in mentorship, collaboration, and technical development. Whether you are pursuing your PQS or CEC designation or looking to expand your expertise across estimating and monitoring, you will have the support, training, and hands-on exposure needed to continue progressing your career. As the team continues to grow, there will be opportunities to advance into Senior Cost Consultant, lead-level responsibilities, and longer-term leadership pathways within the organization.
Growth, stability, and national exposure. You will join a growing team driven by strong repeat business, long-standing client relationships, and increasing market demand across Atlantic Canada. Along with the opportunity to contribute to meaningful regional projects, you will also gain exposure to national mandates and cross-country collaboration through Altus Group’s broader network, creating long-term opportunities for professional growth, mobility, and expanded project experience across Canada.
As our new Cost Consultant, you will:
- Deliver estimating and project monitoring services across active construction projects. You will prepare conceptual and detailed cost estimates, complete quantity take-offs, review drawings and contract documentation, and contribute to accurate project costing across a range of developments. You will also conduct site visits, review contractor progress claims, assess change orders, and help maintain accurate project documentation throughout the lifecycle of a project.
- Build relationships and contribute to project delivery. You will work closely with senior consultants, contractors, suppliers, lenders, and clients to support budgeting, cost validation, reporting, and project oversight activities. Through market research, pricing validation, project discussions, and ongoing collaboration, you will help deliver responsive, accurate, and high-quality consulting services across the Atlantic region.
- Develop broad consulting and construction expertise. Unlike larger organizations where estimating and monitoring responsibilities are often separated, you will gain hands-on exposure across both disciplines while working alongside experienced Cost Consultants and industry leaders. As your experience grows, you will take on increasing responsibility, contribute to more complex projects, and continue building your technical, client-facing, and consulting capabilities within a growing Atlantic Canada practice.
You bring:
- The education and industry foundation. You have a diploma or degree in Architectural Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Architecture, Building Science, Construction, or a related discipline. Equivalent education and international quantity surveying backgrounds will also be considered. You bring a strong understanding of construction principles, drawings, specifications, and project documentation within the construction and development industry. Professional Quantity Surveyor (PQS) or Construction Estimator Certified (CEC) designation with CIQS is preferred. Candidates actively working toward their designation will also be considered.
- The estimating and project monitoring experience. You have experience in estimating, quantity surveying, cost consulting, project monitoring, or construction cost management. You are comfortable preparing quantity take-offs, supporting detailed and conceptual cost estimates, reviewing change orders, and contributing to project reporting and cost analysis activities across different stages of the project lifecycle.
- The technical and analytical capabilities. You are detail-oriented and comfortable working with drawings, pricing, quantities, contracts, and project documentation. You can analyze information critically, maintain accuracy under deadlines, and balance multiple priorities while contributing to consistent and high-quality project deliverables. Experience with CostX, Bluebeam, Microsoft Excel, and related construction or estimating software is considered a strong asset.
- The relationship-building and communication skills. You can work effectively with senior consultants, contractors, suppliers, lenders, consultants, and clients in a collaborative and professional environment. You ask thoughtful questions, communicate clearly, and contribute positively to discussions related to project scope, pricing, market conditions, and construction activities.
- The accountability, adaptability, and work ethic. You are dependable, proactive, and responsive in how you approach your work. You are comfortable working independently within a remote and field-based environment while remaining collaborative, organized, and client-focused. You take pride in producing accurate work, building trusted relationships, and contributing to a team culture grounded in integrity, accountability, and high-quality service delivery.
