Mission and Goals
We're seeking an exceptional Staff Data Platform Engineer to help design, build, and scale the foundational infrastructure that powers our data ecosystem. This is a high-impact role where you'll design resilient, scalable data platforms that enable thousands of data consumers across the organization. We are in the process of a legacy migration to a new cloud first approach. Think SRE meets data engineering – you'll ensure our data infrastructure is reliable, performant, and evolves with our growing needs.
What You'll Do
Platform Architecture & Design
- Contribute to scalable data platform architectures supporting large-scale workloads
- Help build self-service data infrastructure that empowers data teams to move fast while maintaining reliability
- Support event-driven systems using Kafka and stream processing frameworks for real-time data flows
Infrastructure as Code & Automation
- Implement Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar tools
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for data infrastructure deployment and testing
- Support automated monitoring, alerting, and system maintenance for data platforms
- Contribute to deployment strategies that enable reliable updates across distributed data systems
Security & Governance
- Implement comprehensive data security frameworks including encryption, access controls, and audit logging
- Support authorization systems with appropriate data access controls and onboarding of tools via systems like Sailpoint
- Establish SLAs/SLOs for data platform services and implement comprehensive observability
- Lead incident response and conduct thorough post-mortems to prevent recurring issues
What You Bring
Technical Expertise
- Strong Python proficiency with experience in scripting, automation, and application development
- Database and SQL mastery across multiple paradigms: PostgreSQL, MySQL, Snowflake, Oracle, DynamoDB, MongoDB
- Kafka ecosystem experience including cluster management, debezium experience, schema registry, connect frameworks, and stream processing
- Container orchestration with Kubernetes and Docker,
Platform Engineering Skills
- Experience with of Infrastructure as Code and GitOps practices
- Familiarity with observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, Jaeger)
- Experience with data orchestration tools like Airflow, Prefect, or Dagster
- Experience in maintaining and modernizing legacy data systems while ensuring business continuity
Scale & Complexity
- Experience with data platforms processing multi-TB daily workloads
- Background supporting systems with hundreds of concurrent users
- Familiarity with cloud architectures and distributed systems
- Experience in performance monitoring and optimization
- Experience supporting and maintaining legacy data systems including traditional databases and ETL tools
Leadership & Collaboration
- Strong collaboration skills with data teams, analysts, and stakeholders
- Ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions
- Interest in learning new technologies and growing technical expertise
- Experience working in team environments and supporting shared infrastructure
Bonus Points
- Experience with modern data stack tools (dbt, Fivetran, Looker, etc.)
- Background in machine learning infrastructure and MLOps
- Experience with real-time analytics and event streaming architectures
- Knowledge of data privacy frameworks (GDPR, CCPA) and implementation
- Previous experience in high-growth or enterprise environments
- Experience with legacy technologies such as Oracle, Sql Server, Informatica, SSIS, Business Objects
What Success Looks Like
First 90 Days: First 90 Days: Learn our current data architecture, understand existing systems, and begin contributing to platform improvements and maintenance tasks.
First Year: Take ownership of specific platform components, contribute to system reliability improvements, and support both modern and legacy infrastructure needs.
Ongoing: Drive technical improvements within your domain expertise, support platform growth, and help bridge legacy systems with modern data architecture.
