Flutterwave was founded on the principle that every African must be able to participate and thrive in the global economy. To achieve this objective, we have built a trusted payment infrastructure that allows consumers and businesses (African and International) make and receive payments in a convenient borderless manner.

The Role

We are looking for a Staff Full-Stack Engineer to lead the design and delivery of the systems that power Flutterwave's core payment flows. You will work across services, APIs, data platforms, operational interfaces, and observability for areas such as Ledger, Acquiring, Payouts, and Identity. You will set technical direction, solve complex reliability and scale problems, and help senior engineers deliver changes safely across critical systems.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Set the technical direction for core payment systems, including services, APIs, databases, operational interfaces, and observability.
  • Lead the design and delivery of end-to-end changes across Ledger, Acquiring, Payouts, Identity, and related systems.
  • Improve availability, fault tolerance, and deployment practices for services that require little or no downtime.
  • Scale database architecture, data access patterns, and system capacity for growing transaction volumes and major product launches.
  • Design strong idempotency, transaction-management, and data-integrity controls for money movement.
  • Build and improve routing logic that handles payment-method rules, failures, and edge cases safely.
  • Raise engineering standards for security, testing, observability, incident response, and operational readiness.
  • Lead technical reviews, guide complex investigations, and mentor senior engineers across the Core team.
  • Work with Product, Risk, Operations, and other engineering teams to make sound technical decisions for critical payment infrastructure.

Required competency and skillset to be a waver:

  • At least eight years of professional software engineering experience, including significant full-stack ownership.
  • Deep experience with distributed systems, microservices, APIs, and cloud-based production environments.
  • Strong backend engineering experience with financial systems, ledgers, payment gateways, or other transaction-heavy platforms.
  • The ability to work across frontend or operational interfaces when an end-to-end solution requires it.
  • Expert knowledge of relational databases, schema design, query performance, transactions, and data integrity at scale.
  • Strong experience with idempotency, asynchronous processing, fault tolerance, caching, and service-to-service communication.
  • A proven record of leading complex technical programs, production migrations, and reliability improvements.
  • Strong judgment, clear communication, and the ability to influence technical direction across teams.
  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
